Following Cyclone Gabrielle in February 2023, our land transport recovery team launched into action to assess the damage across the district’s 1,265-km roading network. The cyclone damage on top of the wet winter weather in 2022 left the district with 72 roads closed due to large slips, washouts and damaged/destroyed bridges. That's around $150 million worth of damage.
We completed urgent repairs/clean-up at key sites to reconnect rural communities, before planning and prioritising response and recovery efforts to be completed over several years, depending on funding available.

What have we done so far?
Thanks to $45.46 million in cyclone response funding received from NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) in 2023/2024, we completed
- more than 4,000 repairs to reconnect our rural communities in the aftermath of Cyclone Gabrielle, and
- major repairs to 28 severely damaged sites as part of a targeted response programme of work (September 2023-June 2024).

What are we doing now?
We have programmed 34 critical roading recovery repairs to be completed in 2025, thanks to $19 million of funding received from Central Government and the Crown's National Infrastructure Funding and Financing (NIFF):
- 16 landslides, 4 bridges, and 10 erosion protection projects, using $18.1 million funding from Central Government.
- 4 key recovery sites - two landslides on Wimbledon Road, a landslide Elsthorpe Road, and Fletchers Crossing Bridge - thanks to $11 million funding thorough Crown Infrastructure Partners' National Resilience Plan negotiations.

The road beyond recovery
While our roading recovery programme addresses immediate needs, Council recognises the importance of long-term planning to address future climate variability and change impacts on the district's infrastructure.
