The Waipukurau South Growth Precinct project is aiming for an environmentally beneficial stormwater system, allowing for further considered development while providing multiple advantages to the area. This aligns with recent efforts to improve infrastructure and water quality in Central Hawke's Bay.
- Decreased flood risk: The stormwater system will reduce flooding potential for both the precinct and the surrounding urban landscape, providing some flooding protection for the up to 950 homes planned for this area.
- Enhanced biodiversity: Upgrading wetland areas and improving water management, is likely to contribute to increased bio diversity in the area.
- Improved water quality: The stormwater system will help address water quality issues within the Tukituki catchment.
The project's focus on environmentally beneficial stormwater management aligns with modern urban planning principals that emphasise the integration of green (urban parks, sustainable drainage solutions) and grey (traditional stormwater systems, transport networks) infrastructure to improve flood resistance and water quality.
By addressing these issues, the Waipukurau South Growth Precinct project is poised to contribute significantly to the area's sustainable development and environmental health.
This project is broken into two phases.
Phase 1: Delivery of two stormwater basins know as area 1, basins 1&2. Phase 1 is currently underway, project completion April 2025
Phase 2: Delivery of two stormwater basins know as area 1, basins 3&4.
